Lightning Prediction System at Coral Reef Park

Installation of a ThorGuard Lightning Prediction system was completed at Coral Reef Park in the spring of 2012 and is now fully operational. Signs have been installed throughout the park explaining the presence of this vital system. Palmetto Bay Park also utlizes this important safety system.

Park Supervisor Wayne Silvestro and Coral Reef Park personnel have advised the various user groups at the and have received assurances they will fully cooperate in the event of a warning. ThorGuard is active only when the park/tennis complex is open, between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., Monday thru Sunday.

The system is programmed to detect electromagnetic disruptions in the atmosphere up to 15 miles away, and it predicts potential lightning strikes. Thus way, park-goers can have ample time to seek safety. When hazardous conditions exist, a warning air-horn siren sounds and a strobe light is activated. When the threat passes, an “all-clear” siren sounds three times, and the strobe lights are deactivated.

The ThorGuard is operational in hundreds of parks, stadiums, golf courses, and other outdoor facilities; around the country and is considered to be the premier system of it’s kind. We are very proud to say that the Village of Palmetto Bay offers this quality safety feature within our parks system.
