Palmetto Bay Launches New Senior Programs

Palmetto Bay Now Serving 'Summer Senior Sampler'

PALMETTO BAY, FL -- This summer, through Sept. 1, Palmetto Bay is serving up a veritable blue-plate special of senior seminars, exercise classes, and other activities at the Arlene & Edward Feller Community Room at Ludovici Park. As featured in the current edition of Palmetto Bay News, the Parks department created this Summer Senior Sampler" program to meet the demand for a wide range of free and low-priced programs.

Seniors may now enjoy such weekly classes in Zumba, music therapy  arts and crafts, as well as monthly Medicare seminars -- whether you're a Palmetto Bay resident or not! This new program complements the many existing programs offered to residents of all ages who enjoy the Village Parks system.

SATURDAYS -- Zumba by Fabi Mathelier, $4 per class through Sept. 1: Zumba by Fabi targets the largest growing segment of the population: baby boomers. It takes the Zumba formula and modifies the moves and pacing to suit the needs of the active older participant, as well as those just starting their journey to a fit and healthy lifestyle. What stays the same are all the elements the Zumba Fitness-Party is known for:

  • Zesty Latin music, like salsa, merengue, cumbia, and reggaeton;
  • Exhilarating, easy-to-follow moves; and
  • Invigorating, party-like atmosphere.

Active older adults want camaraderie, excitement, and fitness as a regular part of their weekly schedule. Zumba by Fabi is the perfect fit. It’s a dance-fitness class that feels friendly, and most of all, fun. Saturdays, 9:30 a.m., $4/class at Edward & Arlene Feller Community Room at Ludovici Park

MONDAYS -- Art & Crafts by Art Thyme Studios, $10 per class, through Aug. 27, including supplies and finished product: Explore your inner artist with South Florida's premiere paint-your-own-pottery studio. Owned and operated by local professional artists, Art Thyme will work with seniors in the area on projects such as a hand-painted decorative hanging wall tile that would feature a three-dimensional flower and/or butterfly. Participants can also inscribe a saying or message on their piece. We would show the participants basic painting techniques. The participants don't have to be "artistic" because we provide step-by-step instruction. (In photo at right, instructor Alexandra Burdett. Mondays, 3 p.m., $10/class at the Edward & Arlene Feller Community Room at Ludovici Park.

FRIDAYS -- Music Therapy by Nathalie Chazyn, $3 per class through Aug. 31: Music therapy aims to help us reveal our inner joy by using musical games, songs and musical experiences during the workshop. Music therapy has been shown to improve mood, increase motivation and positive emotions, and to induce a better quality of life. According to Chazyn (pictured at right with senior resident), "Our project is committed to promote sense awakening, communication skills, memory, sensory motor skills, improve mood, increase motivation and positive emotions! You don’t need to know how to play any musical instruments! Come experience this wondrous class for yourself and restore your physical and mental balance!" Fridays, 11 a.m., $3/class at the Edward & Arlene Feller Community Room at Ludovici Park.

PROGRAM CONCLUDED -- Medicare Seminars by Matthew Gold, free admission: A series of three free seminars by Matthew Gold (in photo at right) for answers on Medicare Solutions for senior citizens.
