Palmetto Bay Police Raise $2,880 for DARE Program
PALMETTO BAY, FL, NOV 17, 2012 -- The Annual Palmetto Bay Arts & Crafts Festival for D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education" Program), raised $2,530 from proceeds provided by 60 vendors. Add to that a generous $350 donation from Alexander Montessori Academy -- and the total amount raised during the Nov. 17 event was $2,880.
About 700 visitors attended. Music was provided by WDNA 88.9 Jazz Radio with Mr. Howard Duperly. The festival included food vendors, local artists, bounce house, and face painting for children.
“We are so grateful for the Palmetto Bay Parks & Rec staff," said Community Outreach Officer Patience Glasko, event organizer. "They did a fantastic job assisting Village Police staff to manage the Arts & Craft fair throughout the day.” Donations will help fund the popular anti-drug program for school-age children in Palmetto Bay through the purchase of student workbooks and diplomas.
DARE BACKGROUND:
This year, hundreds of school children around the Village will benefit from DARE, the highly acclaimed program that gives kids the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence. DARE was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles and has proven so successful that it is now being implemented in 75 percent of our nation's school districts and in more than 43 countries around the world. DARE is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives. For information about D.A.R.E. or any other Palmetto Bay Policing Unit Outreach Programs, call 305-278-4000.
Coordinated by one of the most dedicated Community Outreach Officers on the Palmetto Bay squad, Patience Glasko, more than 65 arts & crafts vendors will be featured at Coral Reef Park. Proceeds from vendor registration fees help fund the popular anti-drug program for school-age children in Palmetto Bay through the purchase of student workbooks and diplomas.
We also have arranged with radio station WDNA-88.9 to provide a live-remote broadcast from the park on event day.
Vendors may submit applications; fee is $60 (food vendors $70). Pick up a vendor application in person at the Palmetto Bay Policing Station, 9705 E. Hibiscus St. (weekdays 9-5) or via e-mail or call 305-278-4000 for information.
