Holiday Trash Pick-up … On the MLK Day, Jan. 16, there will be no County-provided curbside garbage or trash collection services. Water & Sewer Work ... The County Water & Sewer Department has begun a sewer pump-station improvement project to install an 8-inch force main along SW 89 Ave., from SW 148 to 156 Streets. “Big-a Ride” Coming to Town ... Operating Budget … Council approved the Budget for 2011-12 with a millage rate of 2.447. The final document is currently being prepared -- meanwhile, review the proposed version. OCT 1, 2011

Perrine Elementary Renaming ... Miami-Dade County Public Schools will hold a public hearing on a proposed renaming for Perrine Elementary School, to be held at Perrine Elementary School Cafeteria. Contact Principal Maileen Ferrer via e-mail or call 305-235-2442. OCT 26, 2011

Red Ribbon Week ... Coral Reef Elementary invited the Mayor/Council to help "raise" awareness of this national anti-drug program by releasing hundreds of red (biodegradable) balloons carrying an important anti-drug message. OCT 21, 2011

Rains Cause Flooding ... In the wake of Sunday's torrential rains, Public Works staff has been removing debris from Village catch basins. Several communities experienced severe flooding -- South Dade, in particular, according to The Herald. OCT 31, 2011

Town Hall Meeting ... Building & Permitting Advisory Board hosts a meeting tonight at Village Hall (Oct. 26) at 6 pm, to gather public input -- be part of the process. OCT. 26, 2011

Weekend Road Closure … Off-duty police will be re-directing traffic at the intersection of SW 89 Ave. and 152 St. this weekend as County Water & Sewer crews will be working on a forcemain project, 9am - 7pm, Sat. - Mon. Also look for detours signs with applicable dates and times of closure. OCT 6, 2011

Dolphin Crossing ... Last week's dedication ceremony at Coral Reef Elementary was a rousing success as hundreds of students joined for the co-designation of a new street sign, Dolphin Crossing -- in recognition of the school mascot. SEP 16, 2011

Alzheimer's Walk ... The Mayor and Village Council issued a proclamation at evening’s Regular Council Meeting to William Sussman for his work in organizing the Miami-Dade Walk to End Alzheimer's. The event takes place Oct. 29 in the park directly across from Coral Gables City Hall at 8:15 a.m. See registration info. OCT 3, 2011

Roadway & Drainage Project ... In addition to the ongoing Public Works project (mentioned above), a four-phase project is taking place in the Mangowood area: Phase 1 drainage work will be finished Aug. 18; with asphalt and swale prep completed Sept. 5. Expect some detours. AUG 16, 2011

County Rebates ... Thinking about upgrading your appliances? Now's the time --the County’s Residential Appliance Rebate Program offers participants a $200 rebate on a qualifying Energy Star refrigerators, and $150 off qualifying Energy Star clothes washers. First-come, first-serve for pre-registered residents. SEP 29, 2011

No Tsunami Warnings ... A magnitude 6.0 earthquake hit about 25 miles off the coast of Cuba early this morning, 375 miles SE of Havana. Geophysicists say earthquakes are common in that area of the sea and no tsunami warnings have been issued. Read more. SEP 15, 2011

Tropical Storm Maria ... Dept of Emergency Management is monitoring Tropical Storm Maria, as she gains strength about 600 miles S-SW of Bermuda. Maria poses no threat to S. Fla., as she is forecast to resume a northward track over the next few days. Stay tuned via the National Hurricane Center and via their mobile link. SEP 14, 2011

Commissioner Bell Event ... Miami-Dade County Commissioner Lynda Bell is coming to the Palmetto Bay Village Center on Sept. 7 (6-7:30 p.m.) to discuss “transparency in municipal government.” The event is free and open to the public. SEP 1, 2011

Miami-Dade Expressway Authority ... MDX, in coordination with Miami-Dade Transit and FDOT, hosts meetings to discuss the US-1 Express Lanes Project. Both meetings are 6 - 8pm: Sept 7 at Coral Reef Library; and Sept 8 at the South Dade Gov't Center. SEP 7, 2011

IBus Service Interruption ... The Village's commuter bus service, IBus, will be back in service, Tuesday morning, Sept. 6, following a maintenance interruption. We regret the inconvenience and thank you for your patience. SEP 1, 2011

Tropical Depression ... The County is presently monitoring TD #12. If it further develops it would be named Tropical Storm  Katia. This will be theirs sole notification on this weather system, unless it becomes a threat to us. AUG 29, 2011

Storm Surge Simulator ... The County has a new tool that allows residents to gain a realistic picture of a storm surge at the exact location of your home. Type in your address, select the storm-category (1-5), and let the Storm Surge Simulator do the rest. AUG 24, 2011

"Basin A" Project ... The County continues its effort to bring water and sewer lines to the FT&I District, for fire protection/economic development. Work on "Basin-A," bordered by SW 168 and 174 Streets, will take a year. Join the public discussion re local impact, Aug. 31. AUG 31, 2011

Pet Disaster-Plan ...  Visit Animal Services for a handy pet-owner checklist -- and to view locations of pet-friendly evacuation centers, how to pre-register, and what types of pets are allowed. AUG 23, 2011

Police "Took the Money" ... On a new ABC-TV show that aired Aug 16, two Palmetto Bay officers retrieved $100,000 in cash: Sgt. Manny Munoz and Sgt. Jorge Luis Montero had only 48 hours to search for a hidden briefcase containing the loot using clues left by the opposing team. Good police work, guys... Congratulations. AUG 17, 2011

Historic Preservation ... Submit your application to serve on the Historic Preservation Advisory Board. If you are interested -- and qualified -- please respond by Sept. 2. The Board serves in an advisory role to identify/administer historical, cultural, and archeological resources. AUG 30, 2011

Why No Bike Lanes ... A resident recently asked why bike lanes were not introduced as part of the SW 144 St. road-way improvement project. Our Public Works team reports that the street is not wide enough for bicycles and cars to operate safely within one lane.  Read more. AUG 12, 2011

Flood Prone Homes … The County and the Fla. Division of Emergency Management are hosting workshops for homeowners who have filed repetitive flood claims and may now be eligible for federal funding to prevent future losses. AUG 17, 2011

Clyde Hinson Sign Dedication ... More than 50 guests attended a dedication ceremony Tuesday, at which the Mayor unveiled a new street sign on SW 174 St. in honor of the late Clyde Hinson. See photos on Facebook. AUG 2, 2011

Thomas Mitchell Video ... Historic Preservation Advisory Board commissioned a video of the late Thomas Mitchell re his family history and the early days in South Miami-Dade. JULY 15, 2011

Skin Cancer Screenings Saturday ... The Miami-Dade AHEC is providing free skin cancer screenings to adult participants. The program is geared to promote annual skin care screenings to ensure early diagnosis. Residents will be seen on a first-come, first-serve basis. Download this flyer -- help spread the news. County Budget Town Hall ... Miami-Dade County’s Mayor Carlos Gimenez conducts a County Budget Town Hall Meeting at Palmetto Bay Village Hall, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m. for all South-Dade residents.

Street Name Honors Judge … The Village Mayor, Council, and County Commissioner hosted the dedication of a portion of SW 67 Ave. in honor of the late Judge Henry Leyte-Vidal, a highly respected member of the judiciary of the Circuit Court -- and a resident of Palmetto Bay. Agreement with County Film Office … The Palmetto Bay Council recently approved an agreement with the Miami-Dade Office of Film & Entertainment that allows them to serve as our "agent" by attracting production companies to use Palmetto Bay as a film location, managing permitting, and providing insurance for us.
