If the success of a major community event be measured by the number of hot dogs served, Palmetto Bay’s Annual Celebration Picnic was definitely a big wiener this year – with more than 3,000 dogs devoured. Great games, and rides, and other kiddie activities greeted picnic-goers. Thousands of ears or roasted corn, donuts, pizza, chips, and soft drinks -- all free to the public -- were also on the menu. The celebration is sponsored by the Village as a way of sharing the warm spirit of Palmetto Bay as a great place to live, work, and play. Village Police Department personnel also were on hand, doing their civic duty, by showcasing important services including finger printing for children, and by providing information about DARE and rad/KIDS.

MAYOR'S CUP BASEBALL TOURNAMENT
The picnic also is the backdrop for the annual Mayor's Cup Baseball Tournament between fierce rivals Palmetto High School and Coral Reef High School. Following a first pitch by Mayor Shelley Stanczyk, Miami Palmetto Panthers clawed their way from a 2-0 deficit to eventually win the game 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning on a wild pitch. FRONT-ROW SEAT TO HISTORY -- ON THE IBUS:
Most people are unaware that the history of South-Dade goes back 10,000 years, to a time when native settlers were drawn here due to a geologic formation called the Atlantic Coastal Ridge. Another little known fact is that the original Town of Cutler, founded in the late 19th century where today's Deering Estate sits, was abandoned when Henry Flagler's railroad bypassed it entirely.

Thanks to the volunteer members of the Historic Preservation Advisory Board and the Art in Public Places Advisory Board, residents again enjoyed the Palmetto Bay Historic Highlights Bus Tour. Two tours this year departed from the picnic grounds at Coral Reef Park, providing participants onboard a Village IBus a one-hour tour featuring a short history of Palmetto Bay, complete with curb-side visits to several significant properties and sites.
