Election Information

INFORMATION REGARDING SPECIAL MAIL-IN ELECTION OF JUNE 25, 2009

On June 25, 2009, a Special Mail-In Election will be conducted in the Village of Palmetto Bay. The Village has four questions on the ballot. The entire ballot, which will be mailed by Miami-Dade County to registered voters starting June 5, can be viewed here (County law requires the ballot be translated into three languages.) Also, in order to further assist the public, the following documents are provided for your information:

  • The envelope you will receive has certain information on it, which gives it a distinct look (the information is required by State law);
  • You will be given a return mailing envelope, too;
  • Instructions on how to vote are included; and
  • The ballot is provided (the optical scan version).

Sections 101.6101 -101.6107 of the Florida Statutes govern the “Mail Ballot Election Act.” Under those laws, Lester Sola, as County Supervisor, is the only Supervisor of this election. Additionally, the County Canvassing Board is the only Canvassing Board for this election. The County Canvassing Board is comprised of Lester Sola, County Commissioner Carlos Gimenez, and County Court Judge Bronwyn Miller.

The following is a time line of the schedule of tasks that will be performed by Mr. Sola’s Department:

May 27 - Books Close (meaning, the last day an individual can register to vote in order for their vote to be counted in this election. If you are already registered to vote in Miami-Dade County, you do not need to re-register.)

Week of May 31 – June 6: Second Notice of Special Election shall be advertised

June 25: All Mail in ballots must be received by the Supervisor of Elections of Miami-Dade County by 7 pm (2700 NW 87 Ave.)

June 26: Final Canvassing of ballots

June 29 Special Council Meeting requested - The Elections Department requires the Village Council to formally certify the results in order for the post-audit to be performed (post-audit is a new State mandate).

June 30: If the Council agrees to meet on June 29th, the post-election audit will be performed, as required by State law

Important issues to note:

  • Registered voters will NOT be given postage by the Elections Department. POSTAGE IS REQUIRED!!! The ballot is one page long and requires the standard postage ($.44).
  • The Village is NOT permitted to be a drop-off point for ballots, in other words, Village Hall is NOT permitted to hand-deliver ballots for the public.
  • Post-marks do NOT matter – the date of receipt MUST be by 7 pm on June 25. If you mail your ballot on June 23 and it doesn’t reach County Elections in time, your vote will not be counted.
  • If you are an absentee voter that has previously provided a mailing address to the County, the address you previously provided remains valid. If for some reason you will be out of town or did not receive your ballot, you may request a ballot be mailed to you by contacting the Elections Department no later than June 19.

Although the Village Clerk Meighan Rader is not the official Supervisor of this Election, please feel free to contact her at 305-259-1234 or via email. Recently the Village mailed an informational brochure concerning three of the four ballot questions.

Miami-Dade Elections Department can also be reached via website and by calling 305-499-VOTE (305-499-8683).
