Powers of the Mayor
In accordance with the Village charter, the Mayor is recognized as the head of the Village government for all ceremonial purposes, military law, and for service of process. Additionally, the Mayor presides at meetings of the Council and is a voting member of the Council.
The Mayor has the following additional responsibilities:
- Present a State of the Village address annually
- Create and appoint, subject to Council approval, committees of the Council which may include non-Council members
- Is the Village official designated to represent the Village in all dealings with other governmental entities
Biography - Shelley Stanczyk
Shelley Stanczyk, is honored to serve as the Mayor of Palmetto Bay. First elected as Councilmember Seat 3 in 2006, Mayor Stanczyk was elected to her current position as Mayor in November 2010.
A member of the Village Council since 2006, representing District-3, Mayor Shelley Stanczyk was elected to her current position as Mayor in November 2010. She has lived in South-Dade with her husband Stanley since 1972, and moved to the Palmetto Bay area in 1977. Mayor Stanczyk is the proud mother of three daughters – all of whom attended area public schools including Perrine Elementary, Southwood Middle, Miami Palmetto Senior High, and Coral Reef Senior High School. She is the owner of the Antique Mall Y'All, an antique mall located in the Franjo Triangle/Island commercial area -- the Village's emerging downtown district.
Mayor Stanczyk earned her Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration from the University of Miami, where she later served as an administrator in Student Affairs (additionally, she served in a similar role at Florida International University). Mayor Stanczyk taught ESOL & Citizenship to adults for DCPS and later for a private school as a Lead Teacher until 2000. Mayor Stanczyk possesses her Real Estate license and is an active member of the Palmetto Bay Business Association.
Accomplishments and Initiatives
Mayor Stanczyk is a strong supporter of transparency in government and public involvement. During her tenure as Councilmember, she joined the Council in fostering ways by which residents may bring forth ideas and input, whereby addressing questions directly with the Council. Ms. Stanczyk served as the Council Liaison for the Old Cutler Bike Trail Committee and supported the "Shop Palmetto Bay” effort to promote business development in the Village.
Mayor Stanczyk also played an active role as past President of the PTA, Chair/Vice Chair of the Miami-Palmetto Senior High School Feeder Pattern, Chair/Vice Chair of the Citizen’s Advisory Committee, Chair of the Bus Lane Design Committee, and was a Girl Scout Troop Leader & Recruiter.
