About the Project
One of the greatest accomplishments of the Village of Palmetto Bay was the Spring 2009 completion of the greatly anticipated public library at 17641 Old Cutler Road. The Village of Palmetto Bay Branch Library & Ed & Arlene Feller Community Center at Ludovici Park was conceived in partnership with the Miami-Dade County Public Library System. The joint venture arose from the need to establish a community library to serve residents of Palmetto Bay. On November 2, 2009, the Community Room was officially named after Palmetto Bay Councilmember Ed Feller, MD, and his wife, Arlene, who lead the development of the park and library facility.
The 5,000 square-foot Palmetto Bay Branch Library functions as a neighborhood library, and is located next to an environmentally-oriented park. The library building is complemented by a 2,000-square-foot, two-story Community Center, offering a meeting space overlooking a preserved mangrove area and the beautiful Biscayne Bay waters beyond. Additionally, the first story amphitheater provides space for special performances and serve as an additional outdoor area for lectures, workshops, and children’s activities.
The site is within walking distance from another recently acquired park, which houses a historically-significant house (the Thalatta Estate) and provides access to Biscayne Bay. Both park sites will be connected by the historic Old Cutler Road trail, and both feature recreational trails within the property.
The Village of Palmetto Bay contracted the services of Wolfberg-Alvarez and Partners, a renowned architectural firm, to design the one-of-a-kind library building and public space. Additionally, the firm of A2 Group, Inc., provided Construction Management Services at Risk.
