Canal Town Hall Summary

Canal Town Hall News:  Monday night at Village Hall, a discussion was held regarding issues facing homeowners who live along the C-100A canal.   Palmetto Bay Mayor Karyn Cunningham along with guest speakers County Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava and Armando Villaboy of the South Florida Water Management District discussed the district's upcoming vegetation removal project and addressed efforts supporting other concerns voiced by residents such as the reduction and enforcement of speed limits for boats and other personal watercraft. Law enforcement officials also addressed the gathering.

Villaboy explained that the purpose of the removal is to reduce the potential risk of canal blockage due to fallen trees during a hurricane.  He acknowledged that the letter issued from SFWMD stated that the project would begin in early January, but said the actual work will likely begin the first week of February. The affected vegetation includes large Hardwood trees or palms within  20 feet from the canal bank, depending on district easement. Ficus trees and ficus hedges are also included.  Villaboy said that easement measurements can vary depending on the property. When questioned about potential erosion caused by vegetation removal, Villaboy said that SFWMD officials will visit any affected home (upon owner's request) to conduct an assessment prior to work.  He also said homeowners will be given 90 days to get permits for non-permitted docks.
