[ARCHIVED] Palmetto Bay Nominated for "Safe Streets Award"

Your Village has been nominated for this honor by the Safe Streets Summit, a collaborative effort between the Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization, the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization as well as the Palm Beach Transportation Planning Agency. Their goal is to provide a local yet regionally connected approach to prioritizing and implementing Complete Streets throughout Southeast Florida. Attendees at this year's #SafeStreetsSummit to be held in February will vote for the winners. "The Village of Palmetto Bay is dedicated to enhancing our community into a safe and complete street model. The Village has focused on the growth of our community, which has driven us to improve our roads and building a walkable downtown that will bring pedestrian traffic to our upcoming downtown streetscape project.
Using the Village Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan (2009), we have partnered with Miami-Dade County to complete several miles of bike paths along roads that connect riders to main arteries and enable safe passage throughout the Village and other local destinations. We have strategically placed traffic circles at heavily traversed intersections as traffic calming measures. Sidewalk repairs are an on-going project of Palmetto Bay to ensure smooth walking and local connectivity that will soon lead to our downtown walkable mixed-use, multi-modal transit station that will be a vital component to the vision.
Accessibility to jobs is among the top concerns for South Dade residents, and the transit station directly addresses that issue and provides a viable long-term solution. With the erection of a multi-use building by a private contractor and the development of downtown with grant funding we plan to have a booming streetscape area that will be a buzz with jobs in the commercial and business services, finance and insurance, real estate etc. that will enable a pedestrian-friendly environment for our increased population of residents and workers. To accompany these nice roads through - grants, donations and purchases - the Village has increased street canopy by planting more trees throughout the Village.
Since 2018, the Village has established a park and ride with access to Bus Way and other transportation hubs along U.S. 1/South Dixie Highway. The Village has also been awarded funds toward a much-needed transportation expansion plan in the form of a demonstration project that will provide an on-demand ride service and establish a transit facility for our residents and visitors for three-years as a congestion solution. The proposed project of Palmetto Bay will not only help to alleviate the stress of driving on the heavily traversed roads of U.S. 1 but help riders by providing a new source of multi-modal access."
