Last night, Mayor Cunningham, joined by her colleagues on the Village Council, spoke to the Palmetto Bay residents regarding the Community Connectivity Committee recently created at the request of District 8 County Commissioner Cohen Higgins. The committee, which was composed of 4 Palmetto Bay residents and 4 Cutler Bay residents, was tasked with engaging in discussions concerning the construction of a bridge over the C-100 canal at SW 87th Avenue and prepare a report outlining their positions. The report would then be presented to the next meeting of the Transportation Planning Organization Board as they considered to approve or reject the project. Appointees were to be designated by the two municipal Mayors.
A few minutes before the start of the Zoning Hearing, Mayor Cunningham addressed the residents and announced that she would be removing her 4 appointees to the committee and provided her reasons for her difficult decision, including concerns over possible violations of the sunshine laws and lack of guidance and support to the committee members by the county. Additionally, Mayor Cunningham announced that a new 87th Avenue Bridge Task Force created by Village Manager Nick Marano and consisting of her 4 Palmetto Bay appointees will be meeting this Thursday, February 25th at 7 pm to continue their discussion on the bridge project with the goal of completing the report for the TPO.
Palmetto Bay will continue to remain fully engaged in the process. The Village Manager will provide the necessary guidance and support to the newly-created task force and dedicate the right resources so that our volunteer residents can complete their missive stating the Village's position for the TPO's consideration.
